How the rank works

  1. Your income becomes dollars

Converted to your country's currency at the market rate if you typed another, then to US dollars of 2025, either at purchasing power parity (what the money buys locally) or at the market exchange rate. Both rates are WID's own, 2025.

  2. Dollars become each country's money

The same dollars are turned back into every country's currency with that country's rate, so the question becomes: an adult in Japan with this much yen, where do they stand?

  3. Each country places you

WID publishes 127 income thresholds per country: every percentile, then every tenth, hundredth and thousandth of a percent at the top. Between two thresholds the share of adults above you follows a Pareto curve fitted to both ends; above the last one, the curve fitted to the top group's average.

  4. Counts become people

The share above you times the country's adults aged 20 and over gives the number of people. The world rank uses WID's own world distribution, so it lands on the percentiles WID publishes for the world.

Questions

What number should I type?

Your yearly income before income tax, plus what your employer pays on top of it: employer social contributions, pension contributions, health insurance, bonuses, equity that vested. Add rent, dividends and interest you receive. That is the concept WID measures, called pre-tax national income. A French employee should type something close to the "super-brut" salary, a US employee their total compensation.

Why do purchasing power and exchange rate give different ranks?

Purchasing power asks what your money would buy if you lived there: a dollar goes further in India than in Switzerland. Exchange rate asks what your money is worth if you moved it there today. Purchasing power is the fair comparison of living standards and is the default; exchange rate says what you could buy from abroad.

Why is my country's median higher than the salaries I know?

Pre-tax national income adds everything the national accounts count as someone's income: employer contributions, the rent home owners pay themselves, company profits that were kept rather than paid out, interest. That is how the sum of everyone's income equals the country's national income. It also splits a couple's income equally between the two adults. Both raise the figures above what payslips show.

How exact is it?

The arithmetic is exact: fed any of WID's own thresholds, it returns WID's percentile to the fifth decimal. The data is an estimate: WID combines surveys, tax records and national accounts, and the quality differs by country, from tax data covering everyone in France to a survey every few years in some low-income countries. The distribution is 2024, moved to 2025 by the growth of average income per adult, in 2025 prices.

Is anything stored or sent?

No. The page downloads the data once and does every calculation in your browser. Your income stays in the address bar only, so a link to the page carries your answer if you send it.

What does it cost?

Nothing. No account, no tracking, no ads. The data is WID's, under the Creative Commons attribution licence.
